In rehearsals and workshops, Tobias Frank explores choir or orchestra improvisation. He seeks to expand participants' playfulness, inventiveness and creativity as well as their ability to express themselves within the vocabulary of contemporary music.
Singers and instrumental musicians are encouraged to experiment with their own voices or instruments and also to improvise as a group. Participants learn to leave the well-trodden path of traditional music making, discovering instead their ability to create their own improvised work.
The resultant improvisations can take many forms: an impressionistic sound "picture" based perhaps on a psalm or other text, something from the natural world or even atmospheric pieces; an improvised piece in the style of contemporary music; a sound collage developed out of the classical canon where musicians play or sing in small groups spread around the room.
